My Practice and Philosophy
Divorce is probably the most challenging processes you will ever have to endure. It is emotionally exhausting and financially draining. The process itself can be lonely, onerous and confusing. I've been there. My passion for mediation comes from my deeply held belief that underneath the anger and hurt that accompanies divorce, we all have the capacity to be fair and kind. Beyond that, I believe that the individual involved in the conflict are much better able to determine what they need to be content and successful once the process is complete. Judges and attorneys will never know the nuances of the situation and statutes are not written to be flexible or sympathetic to your circumstances. The court system should be your last resort. Trust me, I've been there. Wherever you are in the process, I can help. The goal of my mediation is to help you express your needs and your perspective in a safe, supportive setting. It may be the only opportunity that you have to say what you need to say. For many people, speaking their truth is the most difficult part. I will guide you through the process. We will seek to foster agreement when possible, and help find amicable solutions when there seems to be no middle ground. We will seek common ground and cooperation. Cooperation is especially important when children are involved. The goal of the mediation process is to put both people in the best possible situation to move forward with their lives so that they may experience health and happiness and contentment. In all cases that reach the courtroom, there is a winner and a loser. In mediation, our goal is to determine what you need to move forward, and how to meet those needs. The best way to accomplish this is to break through the anger, resentment and hurt and access our humanity and grace. This can happen, with the help of a skilled mediator, in even the most contentious divorces.

About Me
My name is Teresa Meier. I am a mediator and a licensed attorney, and mother of four children and three stepchildren. Conflict resolution has always been my passion. I believe that we all have within us the ability to create the best possible solutions, and that sometimes happens only after working through our barriers and find our best selves. Those in conflict are frequently angry, hurt and frustrated. A lot of progress toward common ground can be made after talking through those issues. I believe that with the support of a really good mediator, we can find common ground and move forward in the best possible way. My experience with divorce dates back to 1984, when I was 11 and my parents divorced. After graduation law school, I worked for six years as a tax attorney. While this vocation paid well, I found it very lacking in humanity. With the birth of my second child, I quit my job to stay home and begin studying alternative dispute resolution. After raising all four of my kids to school-age, and after experiencing my own divorce, I decided to pursue my passion and became a mediator and qualified neutral in the State of Minnesota. During my training, one of the instructors and several of the participants told me that my compassion and energy and talent for mediation. My highest calling is to help people through their most difficult conflicts, and know I'm doing the right thing! Please call me. I can and will help you.

My Approach
There are many ways to approach the mediation process, depending on the individual circumstances. Prior to meeting, I provide the parties with a form to complete. This form helps clarify the issues and obstacles that we are dealing with, and helps facilitate the process. At all times during the process, I will be NEUTRAL yet supportive. We would then set up a time and place to meet and work through the issues that need to be discussed. As much as possible, I like the discussion to be self directed, though I sometimes help to reframe the issues. Throughout the process, I make sure that the communication is honest and respectful and that everyone involved feels safe and secure so that they can say everything that needs to be said. I know from my own discussions during conflict that I tend to hold back and later regret what I didn't say. My goal is to make sure that both parties feel comfortable and supported and help them find the strength to say what needs to be said. My ultimate goal is to help reach agreements on all issues. It is possible to avoid attorneys' fees altogether. Once we have worked through the issues, I can help draft a judgement and decree or direct you to resources that can do the drafting for little or no cost.

Mediation Should Be AFFORDABLE
The cost of mediation should not be a barrier. Because I believe that the mediation process produces the best possible solutions, I am open to discussing reduced fees for those that are experiencing financial hardship.
