Description of Practice
Deb Sperlak, Esq. is a mediator and arbitrator in private practice. She has been a licensed attorney for 34+ years, earning a Martindale Hubbell preeminent AV rating from her peers and a listing in Denver Magazine as a top Denver lawyer in ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) for 2010. In addition to working as a mediator and arbitrator Ms. Sperlak offers her services as: a) a conflict coach and facilitator for individuals and organizations; b) a settlement and ADR consultant for attorneys; and c) a trainer/coach of mediators.

Professional Background and Experience
Ms. Sperlak practiced law – both transactional and litigation - for 34+ years. She was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law from 2008-2010, teaching Alternative Dispute Resolution, with an emphasis on negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Ms. Sperlak served as a mediator from 2004 to 2010, and as an executive director from 2006 to 2009, of a Colorado and Denver bar association program – CMS, formerly CAMP - that provides mediators in civil cases in Denver County and Small Claims Courts. Ms. Sperlak has experience in mediation both as a mediator and as an attorney representing clients. As a mediator, Ms. Sperlak has mediated well over a hundred cases since 2004. In that role, she has helped numerous parties to effectively resolve a large percentage of the matters she has mediated.

Ms. Sperlak believes very strongly that no one size fits all, and that it is all about the parties and their attorneys. She employs a variety of methods, custom-designed to fit the particular needs and desires of the parties and the situation. Ms. Sperlak consults with parties and attorneys in advance of a mediation session, to obtain pertinent facts and information and to learn what their interests and goals are, what styles and approaches work best for them, whether they have any special requests or concerns, whether and to what extent they are comfortable meeting in joint session, and how they would otherwise like to proceed. If desired, Ms. Sperlak freely offers ideas for more effective communication and resolution, but never requires the parties or attorneys to proceed in a way that does not work for them. As an arbitrator, Ms. Sperlak strives to provide the parties with the opportunity to be and feel heard, and with a meaningful decision – all in a fair, speedy and economical way. Wherever appropriate, she works with attorneys and parties to streamline the process, setting early scheduling conferences and preliminary hearings and prompt evidentiary hearings. Ms. Sperlak will apply whatever rules the parties may choose to govern the arbitration and will willingly provide a written reasoned decision if the parties so desire.

Fees and Areas of Practice
Ms. Sperlak’s rates are reasonable and competitive. Rates vary depending upon the nature of the case or conflict, the type of service, the amount in dispute, and the number of parties and attorneys. Rates start as follows: $100 per hour for conflict coaching and facilitation; $150 per hour for mediation (generally split between the parties); $200 per hour for arbitration and consultation. Expenses are billed at cost. No administrative fees for arbitration other than out-of-pocket costs. Ms. Sperlak is available to work in various locations in and around Denver. She is also willing to travel further distances, including out of state and out of the country in appropriate circumstances.
